Forres Park Tour of the Blue Mountains

Written by John Fletcher

black billed parrot

Focusing on spectacular birding in coffee growing areas of this unique tropical mountain region.

Your flight into Kingston will be met by our staff and you will have your first experience of these dramatic mountains on the 100 minute drive to Forres Park, climbing from sea level to 2500 feet. The lodge is situated on a Blue Mountain Coffee farm with excellent birding on the property – you can expect to see twenty species before breakfast. Each day will be devoted to a different area, with its own special scenery of bird life and other interesting aspects of Jamaican history flora and fauna.

ABBEY GREEN

Leaving Forres Park just before daybreak we drive through river fording on trails up 5,000 feet – the highest coffee farm in Jamaica – 220 year old Abbey Green. The Radnor Trail offers superb scenery on birding all the way up, Abbey Green itself is even more spectacular.

Governor’s Bench

You may choose to visit Governors Bench en route to Flamstead, catch a snack and see the sunset there. Famous look-out spot for former Governors back in the days of the British. Spectacular views of Kingston and surrounds with treacherous hills. Then return to Forres Park as the city below lights up, and darkness falls in the mountains.

The entire trip, (with photo stops), should take half a day and we suggest you leave Forres park at 2:00 p.m.

The Coffee Farm
process

Let our Guide take you up the steep paths by Forres Park and show you where Blue Mountain Coffee is grown. You will wonder how they ever manage to pick the beans, and stay upright on the steep slopes.

After circling one or two coffee paths and being shown how coffee farming is done, come down to the verandah and sip a cup with us!

Tower Hill Lookout
towerhill

A visit to Tower Hill Lookout is well worth the drive or walk. An hour’s walk from Forres Park above the coffee factory takes you to a vantage point, where you can see the country villages you just left, and others stretched across the valleys below you.

On your way back you may stop for a beer or soda at a local bar or you may continue, preferably with a guide to find other hidden villages just around the corner.
